Famously described by Sir Winston Churchill as “The Pearl of Africa” during his African sojourn in 1908, Uganda has rich natural beauty, exceptional wildlife and a mosaic of tribes and cultures. The wide biodiversity and varied climates in Uganda means that you can observe lions prowling the open plains and track mountain gorillas in the misty mountains all in the same day. The more adventurous may want to hike the fabled “Mountains of the Moon” in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park or raft the exhilarating rapids of the Nile River from Jinja. The diverse cultures and warm, friendly people are also a major attraction for tourists. Because there is so much to see and do in Uganda, find out from Chan Brothers Travel Private Tours how tours can be customised according to your interests.

    Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla trekking is a must-do in Uganda, since close to half of the world's remaining population of mountain gorillas are found in this country. There are approximately 786 Mountain Gorillas left in the world and half of them call Bwindi Impenetrable Forest home. Found between 1,000 metres to 2,500 metres above sea level, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – also known as the “Place of Darkness” – has a lush tree cover that blankets the whole forest in near-darkness. While the terrain may be slightly challenging, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to see a family of majestic Mountain Gorillas up close and spend time with them.

If you choose to take a break from gorilla trekking, you will realise that Bwindi is also a bird-lover's paradise. With 347 species of birds and 24 out of a total of 25 Albertine Rift endemic bird species in Uganda, Bwindi is a haven for bird-watching. Customise your Bwindi tour to include bird-watching with your gorilla trek.

    Kasubi Tombs of Buganda kings
The first thing that strikes you about this 30-hectare site is the magnificent reed and ring work in the gigantic dome-shaped grass thatched house where four of the last Buganda kings were buried. A tour of the massive site will acquaint you with the traditions, spiritual beliefs and cultural identity of the Kingdom of Buganda. Considered a major architectural achievement in organic materials, this UNESCO World Heritage site bears important religious and cultural significance for Uganda. Visit these tombs for a glimpse into Uganda's kings of the past.

    Mount Elgon National Park
Fancy exploring an extinct volcano? Mount Elgon is one of Uganda's oldest physical features, first erupting 24 million years ago. It was also once Africa's highest mountain, exceeding Kilimanjaro's current 5,895 metres, but erosion has since reduced its status to the eighth highest peak in Africa. However, Mount Elgon is still the largest volcanic base in the world, stretching 80 kilometres in diameter and 3,000 metres above the surrounding plains. A visit to Mount Elgon's deserted moorlands unveils secluded splendor and interesting wildlife on the mountainside. Unlike other mountains, the ultimate goal for visitors to Mount Elgon is not the final ascent to Wagagai Peak but the descent into the 40km² caldera.
