Framed by the Alps, divided by the fast-flowing Salzach River, crowned by the formidable gaze of Hohensalzburg Fortress and serenaded by the sounds of music wafting from many of the city’s open windows, Salzburg is storybook Austria through and through. As the birthplace of Mozart and the home ground of the fiercely independent prince-archbishops whom dotted their old town with opulent baroque treasures, the 4th-largest city of Austria punches way above its weight in terms of unique offerings such as being the inspirational backdrop that staged the iconic film, The Sound of Music, and the relentless preservation of its music heritage with a packed calendar of concerts and festivals all year round. If you are looking to read up on what Austria is all about, then a customised Salzburg tour package from Chan Brothers Travel Private Tours will be a perfect introductory book.

    Sounding the music out
If you are a fan of "The Sound of Music", going on a themed tour will be a quintessential highlight in Salzburg. If you are not a fan, fret not because such a tour is also going to bring you through some of Salzburg’s most resplendent sightseeing sites. Dance to “Do-Re-Mi” through the sites of Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain, take a slow walk around Nonnberg Convent where Maria Von Trapp lived as a young novice and peer into the family home of the Trapp family at Leopoldskron Palace. Whether you desire to relive the scene of your favourite film or simply looking for a fun way to meet Salzburg’s fairy-tale sites and landscapes, a Sound of Music tour presents a great proposition to sound out the city’s unique charms.

    Stay atop

At 1,287 metres hovering above the old town of Salzburg is Gaisberg, the city’s local mountain. Rightly described as being the balcony of Salzburg, you are promised an unparalleled view of the old town below and glimpses of the picturesque villages nestled in the foothills of the Alps from the distance, and that is if you just climb up its hilly slopes. For more lingering panoramas and exclusive photo opportunities, consider staying overnight at the rustic and authentic Hotel Restaurant Zistelalm where you will slowly but surely leave the cares of your everyday life behind.

    A pious but riotous party
Since 1621, there is a monastery in Salzburg that has been churning out potent beers using a closely guarded recipe and brewing techniques painstakingly passed down by a group of monks. Welcome to Braustubl, Austria’s largest beer inn, where you can choose to take a seat in the ancient wooden vault halls or beneath the chestnut trees in the 1,000-seat outdoor beer garden. Do like what the locals do and get your glass filled at the foyer pump and visit the food stands for hearty local grubs such as ham hock and giant pretzels, and repeat over and over again. And while you lose yourself in the revelry of this golden brew, imagine how it must be like nearly 400 years ago when the monks of Salzburg had that much of the same fun.
