Hemmed in by densely forested hills and populated by bears, wolves, deer and rare bird species, Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s biggest single natural attraction. Granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979, the highlight of the 70,000-acre park is the series of 16 crystalline lakes that tumbles and cascades down its terraced terrains. From the upper reaches with its dramatic woods and rocky cataracts to the lower lakes teeming with fish and herons, the mineral-rich lakes take turns to light up the stage with their distinctive colours ranging from azure and green to grey and shades of blue. Meet Croatia’s breathing lungs through a customised Plitvice Lakes National Park and Croatia tour package with Chan Brothers Travel Private Tours and you are likely to emerge like a breath of fresh air too.
Get the lowdown
The calm lower lakes of Plitvice are like a painter’s palette and a paradise in technicolour. Surrounded by steep cliffs and hidden grottoes, the lakes are perfect spots to explore, hike and contemplate in. Marvel at the spectacular cascade of Novakovice Brod, admire the chameleon qualities of Milanovac, cave in to the underground habitat of Supljara, go on a boat ride into the mysterious Blue Cave of Kaluderovac, and find yourself standing in awe at the foot of 78-metre high waterfall, Veliki Slap.

Get up and go
While the lower cluster charms and seduces eager eyes with its picture-perfect sites, the upper lakes demand equal attention with its wilder and untamed setting. Surrounded by deep woods, the trails snake around and up and down one another with dirt pathways and wooden planks. Depending on how adventurous you are, you can journey to Proscansko, the highest and the most remote lake of them all, or settle relatively comfortably into Kozjak’s spacious setting where Plitvice’s largest lake entertains with its lush vistas and an ever-changing coat of colours.

Get unto the path too
The saying goes “travelling is about the journey as much as it is about the destination”, and this rings pretty true for Plitvice. While we have raved about the actual park itself and its glorious lakes, an insider experience that’s also equally enchanting for the taking is to take a hike through the mountainous path of Medvedak to get into the lakes. The hike up the Dinaric Alps brings you through numerous peaks overlooking the lakes where the best vantages await you. The best part is you can step in and out at different points, in which all will ultimately lead you to your destination.
