Kaohsiung’s dramatic story of metamorphosis is somehow like a coming-of-age film about how the unassuming little sister morphs into a confident woman, in her own beautiful ways. Today, the maritime city is a splendid mash of lush green parks, creative public spaces and a friendly nature that is incredibly infectious. Travellers can choose to indulge in numerous lifestyle offerings along its spruced up riverbanks, go back in time to olden seafaring ports, kick back at its swimming beaches right at the city’s doorstep, and taste the freshest seafood straight out from the ocean. Tempted yet? Plan a customised Kaohsiung or Taiwan tour package with Chan Brothers Travel Private Tours to discover all the maritime magic of Taiwan’s second city today.

    Go seafaring at Qijin Island
A short five-minute ferry ride away from the city and packed full to the brim with rustic family-run eateries offering the freshest catch of the day, it is no wonder that Qijin Island is reputed to be the best stomping ground for all seafood lovers in the whole of Kaohsiung. Aside from mouthwatering cuisine, there are historical and cultural sites aplenty such as Qihou Fort and Tianhou Temple where the seafaring history and traditions of the island are remembered and celebrated. Rent a bike and explore the island’s nooks and crannies, stroll along and out of the Starry Tunnel to a mesmerising view of ocean waves clashing against towering cliffs, and take in the stunning views from Qihou Lighthouse when the sun sets over the ocean. All these and more are but just some of the simple charms of this long slender island.

    Cruise down the Love River

A customised tour to Kaohsiung is incomplete without a sail on the iconic Love River at night, with charming outdoor cafes and beautifully lit buildings fighting for your attention on both sides of the river. Long considered as the spine and focal point of the city, the river is of great cultural significance and plays an important role in the economy of Kaohsiung, both in the past and current. Other quintessential experiences, apart from the sightseeing boat ride, are strolling along the pleasant walkways of the riverbanks, pulling up at a seat at one of the charming cafes and enjoying the gentle river breeze, or getting entertained and serenaded by street artists and musicians playing to the crowds.

A lesson in art at Pier-2 Art Center

With converted abandoned warehouses serving as expansive venues for any experimental art that artists can conjure, and a location right beside the breezy harbour, Pier-2 Art Center is an excellent case study in how formerly neglected spaces can transform into energetic public spaces injecting a bolt of rejuvenation to a city’s urban landscape. An on-going and curated roster of contemporary art exhibitions, cutting-edge design and lifestyle shows and interactive activities within the numerous art saloons and studios lend the venue a constant palpable air of creativity and excitement. Music is also at the forefront of the venue’s agenda when rousing rock music festivals take centre stage numerous times a year. Indeed as its popularity shows, Pier-2 Art Center is a not-to-be-missed highlight if you want to delve deep into the nuance and groove of urban Kaohsiung.
